The Boston Celtics are linked with a bold trade move for Denver Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon, aiming to build an imposing lineup around Jayson Tatum. This hypothetical three-team deal would see Boston consolidate assets from the Jaylen Brown trade to acquire the 2023 NBA champion.

Gordon would restore the two-way size Boston lost when Jaylen Brown departed. Brown was a powerful wing who handled tough defensive assignments. Paul George, acquired in July's deal, can fill some of that role but is 36 years old. Adding the 30-year-old Gordon changes the defensive equation completely.

The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 16.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists last season while shooting 38.9% from three-point range. He signed a four-year, $133 million extension in 2024 and is entering the three-year, roughly $103 million portion of that deal. Gordon's experience as a key piece on Denver's championship team is invaluable. He screens, cuts, attacks mismatches and punishes defenses that help off him, fitting seamlessly next to Tatum and George without requiring an offensive redesign.

A projected closing lineup of Derrick White, George, Tatum, Gordon and Mitchell Robinson would offer exceptional size and shooting at every position. This allows Boston to switch on the perimeter without forcing Tatum to take every demanding matchup.

The Nuggets would send out Gordon's $33.7 million salary and receive Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, Baylor Scheierman and Boston's 2028 first-round pick from Philadelphia. That brings back about $21.4 million in salary, cutting roughly $12.3 million from Denver's payroll.

This financial move is significant. After signing DeMar DeRozan, Denver sat about $3.15 million above the restrictive second salary cap apron. The trade would project to land them roughly $9 million below that line, granting substantial roster-building flexibility. Second-apron teams face severe penalties on aggregating salaries and using exceptions.

Denver also gets immediate basketball help. Pritchard adds backcourt depth behind Jamal Murray. Hauser provides elite floor spacing for Nikola Jokic, and Scheierman offers inexpensive wing depth. The future first-round pick adds long-term value. So Denver becomes deeper, cheaper and more flexible.

Boston received Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-rounders for Jaylen Brown. This proposed deal uses some of that capital to pursue another major upgrade. It would send Jordan Walsh, Luka Garza and a favorable 2030 second-round pick (from the Brown trade) to the Charlotte Hornets to help the move.

This is an aggressive consolidation play. It turns draft assets and role players into a proven, high-impact starter. Gordon's contract, with salaries of about $33.7 million, $36.4 million and $39 million over the next three seasons, represents a significant commitment. But it addresses a clear need for physicality and defensive versatility. Fans can track the evolving roster on our roster page.

A player of Gordon's caliber could help stabilize the team during such playoff-intensity stretches.
