Payton Pritchard is entering his seventh NBA season with the Boston Celtics determined to shatter expectations once again. The guard's declaration comes as the team rides a perfect 5-game winning run, capped by a dominant 144-118 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on April 10. Pritchard, a key bench spark, averaged career-highs of 17.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists last season and is poised for an even larger role.
Speaking at Celtics Media Day, Pritchard directly addressed the limitations others have tried to place on him. "Everybody always tries to put people in a box," Pritchard said. "Every year in my career, since I've been young, people have put me in this box, like, 'This is the player you can be,' and I just feel like those expectations, I've blown them out of the water." He vowed to continue his relentless improvement. "I don't know what I can be doing differently, but I will find something that will make me excel to another level," he added.
Pritchard's evolution is vital for Boston's structure. With Jaylen Brown's departure, head coach Joe Mazzulla needs others to step up. Pritchard is central to that plan. His ability to score and create for others makes him a versatile weapon. He shot nearly 38 percent from three-point range last season. His playmaking will be essential alongside Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, and new additions like Paul George and Mitchell Robinson. The Celtics' recent form proves the system is working. They've won five straight, including a 133-101 rout of the Milwaukee Bucks on April 4 and a 147-129 win over the Miami Heat on April 1.
Financially, Pritchard's standout play has set him up for a significant reward. Reports indicate he is expected to receive a contract extension worth around $22 million per year. He is set to earn $7.7 million this final year of his current deal. On the court, his role could expand further. It's unclear if he'll start or remain the league's premier sixth man. Either way, his ball-handling and offensive initiation will be critical. The team's immediate focus is maintaining momentum. Their last five results-all wins-show a team hitting its stride at the right time, with an average margin of victory over 20 points in their last two games.
